Sports massage isn't the same as a relaxation massage. Here's what it actually does, who benefits, and what a session at Total Health Systems looks like.
Quick answer
Sports massage is a firmer, targeted form of massage therapy built for people who train regularly, whether that means competitive sports, weekend runs, or a physically demanding job. At Total Health Systems, licensed massage therapists use sports massage to loosen overworked muscles, improve flexibility, and help you recover faster between workouts.

If you train hard, whether that's weightlifting, running, hockey, or a job that keeps you on your feet all day, regular massage is not the same as sports massage. Sports massage is built specifically for people who put repeated stress on the same muscles. At Total Health Systems, our licensed massage therapists use sports massage to target overworked tissue, improve range of motion, and shorten the time it takes your body to bounce back.

What is sports massage, and how is it different from a regular massage?

A standard relaxation massage, like Swedish massage, uses long, even strokes meant to calm the nervous system and ease general tension. Sports massage uses many of the same techniques, but your therapist applies them with a specific goal: correcting the muscle imbalances and tight spots that come from repetitive movement. Instead of working the whole body evenly, your therapist focuses on the muscle groups you use most, whether that's your calves and hamstrings from running or your shoulders and forearms from throwing or lifting.

  • Deeper, more targeted pressure on overused muscle groups
  • Techniques aimed at improving flexibility and range of motion, not just relaxation
  • Often timed around training or competition, whether that's before, after, or during a season
  • Can be combined with stretching and trigger point work in the same session

Who benefits from sports massage

You don't have to be a competitive athlete to benefit. We regularly work with:

  • Athletes training for a specific event or season, from youth sports through masters level
  • Weekend runners, cyclists, and golfers who feel tightness in the same areas week after week
  • People in physically demanding jobs, like construction, nursing, or landscaping, who repeat the same motions daily
  • Anyone coming off a hard training block who wants to reduce soreness and get back to activity sooner

What to expect during a sports massage session at Total Health Systems

Your first visit starts with a short conversation about your activity level, training schedule, and where you're feeling tight or sore. Your therapist adjusts pressure and technique based on your feedback throughout the session, since the right pressure for a marathon runner's calves is different from what a weekend golfer needs in their shoulders. We offer 30, 60, and 90 minute sessions, so you can book a quick targeted session before a game or a full body session after a heavy training week.

  • 30 minutes: focused work on one or two problem areas
  • 60 minutes: full body session with extra time on your primary trouble spots
  • 90 minutes: built for serious training loads or general full body maintenance

Sports massage vs deep tissue massage: which one do you need?

Sports massage and deep tissue massage overlap, and people often ask us which one they need. Deep tissue massage is defined by pressure. It works through multiple layers of muscle to release chronic tension anywhere in the body. Sports massage is defined by purpose. It's built around your training and activity, and it often includes deep tissue techniques alongside stretching and lighter work to prepare muscles for activity or help them recover from it. If you're not sure which is the better fit, tell your therapist about your activity level and goals, and they'll build the session around that.

Finding sports massage near you in Macomb County

Most sports massage in Macomb County is offered at small, single-location studios. Total Health Systems is different. We're a multi-disciplinary clinic with six locations across Clinton Township, Chesterfield, Washington, St. Clair Shores, Center Line, and New Baltimore, and we've been treating this community since 1992. If your soreness turns out to be something more than muscle tightness, like a joint issue or a nagging injury, your massage therapist can bring in our chiropractors or physical therapists without sending you somewhere else. If you're recovering from a hard training cycle, our post-workout recovery guidance covers what to expect in the days after a session. We accept most major insurance for medically necessary massage and offer self-pay pricing for sports and wellness massage.
