Fast weight loss on a GLP-1 can leave the face looking hollow and older. Here is what cosmetic acupuncture, microneedling, and red light therapy can realistically do about it, and what they cannot.
Quick answer
Ozempic face is the hollow, older look some people notice after losing weight quickly. It comes mostly from losing fat in the face. Cosmetic acupuncture, microneedling, and red light therapy can improve skin quality, texture, and firmness over a series of sessions. They cannot put volume back. Knowing that difference is how you avoid paying for the wrong thing.

What is Ozempic face?

Ozempic face is a nickname, not a medical diagnosis. It describes the facial changes some people see after significant weight loss on a GLP-1 medication like Ozempic, Wegovy, or Zepbound: hollower cheeks and temples, more visible lines, and looser skin along the jaw. Rapid weight loss on these medications has been linked with premature facial aging in the medical literature.

The face holds pads of fat that give the cheeks and temples their shape. When body fat drops quickly, the face loses some too, and the skin that sat over a fuller face has less underneath to support it. The same thing can happen with any large, fast weight loss. GLP-1 medications are simply the most common reason for it right now.

Two different problems: volume and skin quality

It helps to separate what you are seeing into two parts. Volume is the structure underneath the skin, mostly fat, that has been lost. Skin quality is the skin itself: its thickness, texture, tone, and firmness. These are different problems with different answers, and most disappointment comes from treating one while expecting the other to change.

What natural treatments can do

  • Cosmetic acupuncture uses very fine needles on the face and body to increase local circulation and prompt the skin's natural renewal response.
  • Microneedling creates controlled micro-channels in the skin, which triggers collagen production as part of normal repair. It is the strongest of the three for texture, firmness, and fine lines.
  • Red light therapy uses LED wavelengths to support repair and calm inflammation. It is usually layered onto the other two.

All three work on skin quality. Results build gradually over a series of sessions, because collagen is slow to form. Plan on months, not days.

What they can't do

  • They will not replace lost volume. That is what dermal fillers do, and no amount of collagen stimulation replicates it.
  • They will not produce a same-week change.
  • They will not tighten a large amount of loose skin.
  • They will not work identically for everyone. Skin, age, health history, and consistency all affect the outcome.

If hollowing is your main concern, a consultation with a qualified injector about filler is the more direct route. If your concern is that your skin looks thinner, duller, or less firm than it did, the natural options are a better fit. Some people do both, and that is a reasonable choice.

Should you wait until your weight is stable?

Your face keeps changing while your weight is changing. Treatments aimed at skin quality can generally start during weight loss, but timing is worth talking through at a consultation. If you are still losing quickly, some decisions are easier to make once things settle.

What helps from the inside

Losing weight at a steadier pace, eating enough protein, and strength training all help preserve lean tissue. Whether that protects the face specifically has not been well studied, so we won't overstate it. It does support your overall health and gives your skin the raw materials it needs. Our guide on what to eat on a GLP-1 covers the basics.

What it costs at Total Health Systems

Facial rejuvenation is self-pay, so here are the numbers. Cosmetic acupuncture is 175 dollars per session, microneedling is 250 dollars per session, and red light therapy is 30 dollars per session. A structured three month program that combines ten cosmetic acupuncture sessions with red light therapy and facial cupping, plus three microneedling treatments, is 2,100 dollars.

Facial rejuvenation is performed by Dr. Hannah Pokornicki, our licensed acupuncturist, at our Clinton Township, Washington, and Chesterfield locations. For a fuller comparison of these treatments, see natural alternatives to Botox.
